In the Mist: A Cento

And anyway, what’s wrong with Maybe?
Maybe our world will grow kinder eventually.
Let me keep company always with those
who say “Look!” and laugh in astonishment.
You don’t hear such voices in an hour or day.
It could mean something,
it could mean everything, it could mean
what Rilke meant, when he wrote:
You must change your life, and you too,
grow rich, grow sweetly wild, as you too
were born to be.
