Bladderwrack
-Paul Brookes
Beach Morning
Ocean heaves a ladder toward
shore, sighs and spits.
Retreats, not strong enough
yet, returns, slaps another rung up hardscrabble beach. Step by step
lifts Herself onto land.
Soft seaweed clumps cushion Her steamy, fragrant elbows as She humps Herself out. Air bladders
of their leaves pop, sound
like bubble wrap threaded through
the tangle.
