The Open Shop At War

As robust earth tumbles to an end
Whilst delivering value
I need an extra jumper

As robust war is inevitable
Whilst delivering value
I need a warmer coat

As robust discussions are futile
Whilst you deliver effective service solutions
I need to upgrade my phone

As robust cease fires are temporary business models that deliver value
I need an extra pair of socks

All is end to end
Earth to end,
War continues
Sharpen your core business
in a controlled manner
grow your operations.
People must shop.

Open shops are a sign of peace
Whilst buildings fall around them
Open shops are a sign of calm
When dead people lie in the street

Open Shops are a sign of order
Amidst bomb craters, bullet holes
Open shops let people go on

It will happen

It will happen

when fish climb poplar trees
when grapes grow on a willow
when fish climb poplar trees

It will happen

when chickens grow teeth
two Thursdays in the same week
two Sundays in the same week
when it’s snowing red

It will happen

on horses’ Easter
when cows fly
when flagpole blossoms

The Ribcage A Wardrobe

Open my ribcage like a wardrobe
Sigh at old fashion of my heart
Put on a despair of my shoes
Walk out open door of my senses

Shop in new mall of my thoughts
Same shops as anywhere
Replace despairs on old shoe rack
Close my ribcage
like a wardrobe

The Riffage

Clamped in the upright station of the world
Drowned in the come uppance daylight
Hunkered half light knowingness
Hefts hollow along kerbside

Ferret the mammal heart of the world
Become harsh chandeliers
Become rude shoeless adjectives
verb your character into business

letteropen an alphabet of fire,
a draining board of desire
a kitchen cupboard of flesh
a knifeblock of words
unseating themselves

Griddle down lightning days
Heavying nights moisten to open
Forgiveness in a handshake of trees
a massage of fields amid the nursery
Of war

record visual media
stand to attention wall
mounted retreat into hill
stations of past lives
lived hands free
autobot rainbow of perception

Tinker, tinker with children’s toys
repair your own gored scars
fix bro
ken and Barbie cars without
wheels   pieces
lost toothless jigsaw

Autumn

Night is closer now
Night is colder now
Night is called now
Night clasps you now

Bright not brim dark
Dark whim not bright
Shout hard shun light
Light harsh hard mark

Light is lost past Light
Light is last must Light
Light is past last Light
Light is past lost Light

Rasping hands carpenter seduction
Grasping hands engender destruction

Night block life
Knife block sun
Sun block knife
Life block Night

Fire heals bone
Bone heals breath
Breath heals breath
Birth heals fire

Bone pain cold
Stone pain cold
Grown stone cold
Old Thrown stone

Leaf fall land fall handful
Earth rise tuber rise armful.
Motes mingle winterlight
Handful earthful autumn dark

The Christening

Bill and me av decided
to get our Scott christened
don’t know why
Cos it’s IMPORTANT

We’ll be bound to t’spike
again wi lass wi dog collar
Blind Mary said she’d be
in to M & S. Posh that.

Anyroad we took young ‘un
to’t spike an all this
palaver about joining flock
family o’ God & Christ.

You know what Spike is

that summat they call a church

wi it’s pointy bit. Av got to learn

thee a can see that.

Building could a done

wi some draught excluders

and price. Even Dick wore a mask.

Glad when all yammering
were done an we’d off
to Club for shot or too.
Not Scott free though

Blind Mary said laughing
He gave us a bellyful
of complaining and bile
like we’d murdered sod.

The Baptism

Don’t believe in God, like what some do.
But you got to have something
Sun in sky were boiling
like water from spuds
when they’re abart done
hittin lit gas rings
Church looked like a big spike
and into spike we took our Scott

In spike were this lass
with a white band around her throat
like she’d hurt herself
Dog collar our Jimmy said
But I ain’t seen a dog wear one.

Anyroad, she spouts some fancy
Words about God and us joining summat,
all I remember is building going on for miles
and this posh sink at front
look wicked in our bathroom that.

Anyways, she pours water in sink,
says summat else and finger paints
Scott, all shartin and yellin
as if whole spike tummel darn
around us, and we’re only ones
left standing.

Atterwards at Club our Scott
chewed on his bikkie
like nowt had happened
while we had pint of Best
few shots in dark and a dance.

Jimmy, my brother said Scott

were Christian now, whatever

that means.

We set Club alight with celebration.

The Testimony of William Morewood

William Morewood of Wombwell, age indecipherable.

I went to Wollow Hall
(Wombwell Hall),
Wednesday, Easter week
in afternoon.

Asked Mistress Wombwell
‘How is Master Wombwell?’
‘He is sore sick.’
‘What’s he ail?

‘He’s eaten Calf’s Head
as poisoned him.
I went into Henry’s chamber
where he lay.

Asked him ‘How are you?’
‘I’m done, done, done.’
Night after he was dead
of surfit, of what it were
 I don’t know.
