begins with acknowledgement. I failed to put the top back on the toothpaste, the bins out, think ahead to clothes I might need that need washing, make friends with people I can trust, and that you approve of, vacuum at the right time of day so I don’t wake up the baby of the young mother next door, clean the patio and clear up the mess afterwards, listen to what you tell me and recall it, otherwise you will accuse me of early onset of Alzheimer’s, clean the bathroom thoroughly after I’ve used it, remember our wedding anniversary.

nothing when you’re sat around, face in your phone, not communicating to one sat beside you like a spare wheel, talking to you and you can’t take your face out of your phone as I’m trying to engage you in conversation about what we ought to do about this and that, or tell you about my day and you glance up occasionally and nod with a “huh, huh” then stick your face in your phone. I bet if I sent you a text or messaged you on FB you’d respond with more. Death of conversation.

Luck, Blind And Veiled
with mocking hand,
to danger and doubt
tha sets up the overpraised.
Never have prizes
obtained calm peace,
care on care weighs
them down, an
fresh storms vex their souls.
Great kingdoms drahn
by their own weight,
an luck gives way ‘neath
burden of herself.
Sails preggers with favouring breezes
fear blasts too strongly;
tower which rears its head
in the clouds is brayed by rain.
Whatever Luck raises up,
she lifts but to bring dahn.
Modest outlook gis longer life.
Happy them as is content
with common lot,
with safe breeze
hug shore, and, afeard
to trust their skiff
to bigger sea,
with modest oar
keeps close to land.

Massive
we’d call a band or gig, as if size were a sign of quality, a British kitemark, big it up as if using Black cultural language validated our white hobbies. Appropriate language of those our ancestors enslaved, as if acquired words absolve some suffering and acknowledge our understanding of their ancestors situation. Our crime is massive.
Our Instinct
experts say is fight or flight. Walk away is fists raised, keep your guard up, a dance backwards and forwards, roll with punch drunk abandon, stand your ground. Fight is turn around, close the door behind you, carry your belonging beyond the threshold, know another place to rest your head.
Only one letter difference brings an alteration in life. If only going on was as easy as putting one letter after another.

Immerse
senses in everything else, but the world. You inhale the immaterial, the imagined. Touch the surreal, taste the oneness, hear distant abstractions. No stink of hardness, grate of sourness, tap of shoes on surfaces. You only sense a dream, not dream’s source.
