For my annual National Poetry Month ekphrastic challenge 2021 next month who would like to join artists artists John Law, and Alison Dunhill and poets Tim Fellows, Anne Arbuthnot, Jane Dougherty, Simon Salento and myself. Still plenty of room for more artists and writers.

Here is what some previous participants have said:

This challenge has changed my writing process in response to art. How I approach an artwork for inspiration. How I see art in relation to myself. It’s been a learning experience. From now on I’ll regularly immerse myself in a couple of art pieces and see what shows up!

-Redcat

The Challenge came firstly as a divine gift, opportunity to invoke the poetry muse, express praise of talented gifted
international artists, to be part of world literary community. Amazing learning experience. Thank you Mr Paul.

-Anjum Wasim Dar

As a poet who writes at a leisurely pace and spends a long time polishing, the Ekphrastic Challenge has made me work hard and fast. It has been exciting, sometimes exhausting, and overall an immensely gratifying month. Highly recommended, thanks very much Paul!

-Hilary Otto

Groundbreaking. Thirtyfold increase in poetry output. Most enjoyable, ably assisted by having a drag and drop daily calendar.

It’s that time of the year again! To coincide with NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month) I am running my April Write-a-thon, a prompt-a-day course aimed at getting you to the end of April with enough poems, notes and thoughts to get you through the year! This year I’m running it again with all new prompts!

How it Works

Starting on April 1st, this course will run until 30th of April. You will receive a brand new prompt, every single day, including weekends, delivered straight into your email inbox. The prompts are aimed at getting you putting pen to paper, fingers to keyboards to get a first draft of a poem written. You’ll also have access to a closed facebook group where you can share your work with other members of the course and receive and give feedback. I monitor the group daily and try…

Whither I Go Ye Know

Ten years since
my mother died
still seems like yesterday
in the midst of life
we are in death and oh Lord
don’t I know it even now when
blooms are bursting, pollen is
flying through the world
without end Amen
though I’m not sure
about without end
nor whom may we seek
for succor.

Mam at Coronation street clearer

Here is a photo of my late mam who died of Cancer in 1997. She is on the mobility scooter. The other woman is my late Nanna.

I Watch Athletics With My Mam

All house mirrors have been removed.
I sit on her soft bed, rest an arm
on a spare pillow. Mum’s pillows

stack behind her as we watch a
tv placed where her dress mirror stood.
Once she cried as her hair fell out.
She cried as she gained each pound weight

because she takes the chemicals
to stop her dying, stop the spread.
Once she was ‘petite’, now Mum’s fat
jowls, bingo wings slop on the bed.

Together we watch lithe bodies,
sharp muscle tone dash for the end.
Her home is spotless, a show home.
Every day we polish, scrub,

vacuum, she wants it welcoming.
She nods off half way through the
100 metres, I soft clap
the winner as she would have done.

I remember good times, and smile
at her laughter, gleam in her eyes
when she sees another winner
dash over the race finish line.

Meanwhile, she looks forward to Oakwell,
a new fan of Barnsley FC.
I never go as I don’t like
football, regret my selfishness

and time not enjoying her life.
She will sit in her hired wheelchair
yell and clap at their confidence,
vitality, their will to win.

Review of ‘Measures’ from Clarion Reviews — Bri Bruce Productions

The poems of Measures embrace lyrical tendencies as they move through the seasons of a troubled relationship. Both absence and presence haunt the pages of b. l. bruce’s poetry collection, Measures. A one time lover and longed for friend adventures to the water, leaving their companion alone on the shore. Wrinkles appear as if grooved overnight, and the […]

On over-exposure and other poetry ups and downs — Robin Houghton

It’s been a busy few weeks. To tell the truth, I’m feeling a little over-exposed. You know how annoying it is: Poet X has just launched this, then it’s announced they’re going to be judging some competition or other, then someone has just interviewed them or whatever and you just think I’ve had enough of…

Transmission: On Collaboration, Response, and the ‘Amica-critical’ — Emma Bolland

In my short text ‘Emma bolland | Hestia Peppe’, published in Salon for a Speculative Future, (eds Monika Oeschler with Sharon Kivland, MA BIBLIOTHÈQUE, 2020), I coined the term ‘amica-critical’ to describe the kinds of friendships essential for the creation and sustainability of supportive, reciprocally generous, creative-critical communities. I believe these kinds of friendships to […]

Her Names are Many

Look, there she goes. Dressed in her finery for a Gypsy Rommer.

Black leather boots, long purple dress gold around her neck and a feather in her hat,

She’ll mingle with the guests, drink wine until she’s skimmished.

She’ll hitch her skirts up. Dance like the young ones.

Just before she leaves she’ll give order and sing a song

that nobody knows but everyone loves and then she’ll disappear into the shadows

into the dust that rolls along the empty streets and never settles.

Rommer – wedding; Skimmished – drunk.

Dark is the Forest

Dark is the forest and deep, In times gone past it’s where we’d sleep. Under the oaks or the Hawthorn tree, drop our covels, our minds roam free.

Dark is the forest and deep, for dukkering, our malts will keep, a small gold ring tied with string, around their wrist or in…
