The Fag End

I worked in a dept. store to be closed due
to recession. On day received scraps of paper,
hasty redundancy notices, out of blue,
Manager said ‘ Can we move light fittings over
there. And bring those shades over here.’ Training sesh
had explained customers needed fresh
items
to buy. They soon get bored. Need 30 days or less.
‘item bite.’ Job Centre I’d worked at six months temp
said same. Jobs on boards replaced everyday.
Once items not sell they’re placed at best sell layer.
We had lunch. I needed air, to get away.
Saw St. George’s demolished without a prayer.

Everything is a burning fag end.

I lit up something on which to depend.

The Need to Remember

The need to remember.
The never to forget.
This list of essential tasks
on mobile, in my head.

Milk, bread, light bulbs, to live,
To bury my Nanna
beside my mum, sister.
Lay her casket to rest.

The need to remember
why this delay
to fulfill my Nannas
wish to be buried here,

join daughter, granddaughter.
I have kept her ashes
stored in my room at home.
Close to their photographs.

I have told myself ‘Do
It!’ and nothing is done.
I cannot, will not let
go of her. I am done.

Let her and myself down.
Must get hold of myself.
Must call the vicarage.
Must say a last goodbye.

The never to forget
as I shop these shelves
everything on my list
that needs to be done.

My Nanna, Sister, Mum
Were my bread, milk, light.
My wife, daughter, grand
kids are essentials now.

The need to remember,
the never to forget.
one list to another
an urgent task undone.

The inside of my bones

The inside of my bones
Know this December light
Know this December cold
And Angus pulls on his lead.

A white Highland terrier.
Your bedside companion
Until that December
I took him for a walk.

The inside of my bones
Know this December gust
The surface of my eyes
Gathers so much gritstone.

My December vigil
Your bedside, Mum. Your breath
Irregular like gust.
Went to Dad about it.

I told Dad about it.
“Take Angus for a walk”
And the gust blew the grit.
And Angus pulled his lead.

Home half hour later asked
Where you were. Ambulance
Had taken you away.
I’ve never seen you since.

Gust is ghost breath and still
Brings water to these eyes.
The inside of my bones
Know this December cold.

The Regreened Leaf

Leaves on a tree wear a green mask.
Autumn as they die the mask falls
And we see their true self
Red, yellow or orange

Without sunlight
A tree can no longer mask a leaf.
When it is too cold leaves turn brown.
When a leaf dies we see it’s true self

The tree takes water from the graves
Replenishes tree
Replenishes with memory in water
The tree is the dead
Regreened leaves applaud life

The regreened leaf is a hand
Reattached to a limb
Tree feeds the hands of its canopy
Hears their clapping
Shaking

I hear the special hand clap
Of my late mother in the canopy
Of the applauding trees
And my hands want to clap too

Candlelit Seventies

Without a thought switch flicked
And if glass globe works light
And I recall candlelit Seventies
evening in Winter’s discontent.

How important during that Winter
Electric light, few hours TV,
The extra jumpers and ignorant
thrill of days extraordinary nights

Those nights I recalled stood Underground in Eighties closing mine
That darkness lively with ghosts
As imagination lit up with stories

The Business Language Seduction

A caress would reasonably be considered
to constitute a warmth.

Outline the curves of thought
Including but not limited
to a kiss along

a kiss along
the roundness of an idea
part the differing but similar paths
to explore a third way

Appropriate action will
be taken raising a request
to the service desk
including but not limited to
a move within the body of a thought

And in the heat of consideration,
the sighs of deliberation
whether satisfactory or not
an accommodation by each body
of thought be reached

The Canal Town: Beneath By-Pass A Canal

Look. See marks left by horse lines scarred into iron guards and rollers fixed to locks and bridges to protect
stonework agin decay

Aye, that lad were a smacking whip
Loud as gunshot He were a short handle with very long lash plaited up like old piece of cotton towline.

Down there where by pass is now
recall our sensible boathorse lean steadily into collar kept cotton towline taut continuous pull sped boat.

Good regular Blacksmiths are gold
boat horse wear out set of shoes in four to six weeks.

Posh had ostlers to change horses care for sick horses,  keep stable mucked out ready for use for their valued boating customers.

No cold field for knackered boat horse, every regular stopping place, warehouse, wharf or canalside pub warm stable haven for hoof.

Hard worked canal horse fed well  regularly with corn, crushed oats.
Chopped hay had to be prepared available at provender stores all over.

Some horses work without driver, would ‘backer’
risky business as someone had to be ready
leap ashore if horse boat
plod other way

Often after one horse crossed other’s towline it was driven on smartly  both boats at full pelt

Drum-tight line to outside boat flicked up over
cratch, mast along top-planks caught

lifted over watercan,
chimney, helm by
inside boat’s steerer

very hard work skilled judgement experience  long hours plod drudgery  horses get tired, you walk behind them all day, every day

horses and mules pulled the new long thin canal boats, reliably regularly, sometimes even to strict advertised timetable

Will I wait days for fair wind get paid sometime, or hire gang of men or man and horse drag me barge upriver get paid delivery tomorrow

Then canal was artificial new water still, without current either way Bridges low numerous each with towing path under it

Then it was too much wind, too little, or floods or drought. Better than pack horses or road, almost

A Second Riffing

Photographs of delerium deceive
Mimeographs of insects believe
Radiographs of horribilis dear
Craniographs of fabulous fear

Take the ladder of sight into home
Rake the matter of flight into loam
Brake on platters of plight into roam
Ache in tatters of light zone

Sunlight is finelight is wildlight
Lifetime is wildlife is darklife
Finelight is darktime is moonlife
Deadwild is lifelight is darktime

Seasons are ripe control artists
Autumn swells a tuber orchestra
Winter times a criminal cold watch
Spring flames a filigree wish
Summer fry

History schools disguise hinges gold
Works marks eyeteeth buys goodnews
In letters as big as you like miserable
wherever it goes at the time

History restores fire original grounds
Polished integrity shines shoes
in worn leather arette discerns all
beauty remarkable story in time

Tea towel the evidence of tears
In the fabric of a face distraught
at broken crockery of living
Dissolved in the birth of Why.

Run the tap of silence till it goes cold
Rip the shower map of patience
Undone by the bath of life
Crazy at the loss of switches

Hunt down a crisis of coffee jars
Find wonderful in a winos fears
Wind up a clock that one son
Happenstance often disappears

Hit critical button pop up dolled down whimsical forgot me not blues
Hard assed holy mother of knives
in cracked wisdom tooth news

Caustic delivery hides hints and tints
Highly organised finery total respect
Oranges juice out frets of guitars
Willingly dissect green bins

Finest disarmament heals horror filled theatres bloody cogs log timidity
Terrorise frigidity in a week of woe
a great deal more like number.

Dance time crunch time grey time
Flounce your skulls into bounce
Castles in a sky of cat bowls half eaten hidden menus of menace

Let bygones be sandwiches made for you in the neatest handwriting all over the willingness of your body of truth or dare trembles terror

So much is about where we are in our days of telling each other where we are not half suspecting they know already the half truth you give

May you dream on the edge of time with the wild things and happen upon sanity when a penny drops in the morning
